Watch out! Breaking Orbit are a hot prospect with their debut album The Time Traveller set to achieve great things over the coming months.

The band head to Adelaide for their first show here after a couple of previous attempts. Live Music Adelaide spoke to Drummer Mark Tyson for all the latest on Breaking Orbit.

How much have you been looking forward to the launch tour?

“The album itself has been a long time coming so the opportunity to get out there and to engage with us on the live stage was always going to be the reward for all the hard work in the production phase.”

Can you believe so much work boils down to this?

“Whether you're referring to the album tour or just the album itself I think we always understood what we wanted to achieve, and although we probably didn't fully grasp what was involved at the beginning of the process I think we always knew that it would be a long road (but in the most positive sense). It's partly to do with the genre as well I guess, but the album and this tour in particular represent what we have achieved as a band both musically and professionally, so in short I can totally believe the level and scope of work undertaken but the nature of the business to some degree is that it all gets wrapped up in a single artefact (such as an album) or performance. I guess some people aren't privy to what goes on behind the scenes, but nor should they be.”

Was the album a labour of love?

“As you're probably guessed from my conversation above, this album is pretty special for us, and although we've been playing music together both personally and as Breaking Orbit, we see it as the beginning of something much larger.”

What was your reaction when you played it back for the first time?

“More so Dylan obviously, but we were all pretty involved in the production process so we witnessed the development of each track at quite a low level. But I still remember sitting on a big leather couch at Eagleview Studios with a nice glass of red and listening to the album from start to finish after we'd just got it back Forrester Savill, let’s just say it met all our expectations and more. I didn't stop smiling for a week after that.”

How would you describe the sound of the album?

“I guess it's really up to the listener as music is quite a personal thing and everyone has a different way of looking at thing. I would personally describe the album as an eclectic mix of syncopated rhythms and progressive melodies, with some powerhouse guitar riffage to complement that essential groove... but that's just me. Question is what elements do you hear or speak to you the most?”

Do you think there have been some subtle changes in your bands sound since you started out?

“There's been some subtle changes in some areas, and significant development in others. Like all bands our sound has evolved over time and through our various musical experiences, both individually and as a band, we are now really a happy with where we're at and how it has developed. It will be most interesting to see how it evolves further into the future.”

How did the band get together?

“We have all being playing music together in various forms for eight or nine years and crossed paths regularly within the Sydney live music scene. Following some earlier projects along with a name change in 2009, we started to pull together our debut record. We’ve been recording and touring ever since.”

What has been the most important advice someone has given you that you've remembered the most?

“Never be content with what you have just achieved today unless you plan to give it all away tomorrow. If all the follow-on goodness and self satisfaction is an honest reflection of your achievements, then tomorrow holds even greater, unbounded opportunities to discover. In short......don't stop trying.”

Are you looking forward to heading to Adelaide?

“Of course. We've longed to come across and get involved in the Adelaide music scene. We came close a few years ago but had to postpone, so this is again a long time coming.”

What can we expect on the night?

“I always find it hard to answer this question, but what I can assure you is the raw energy we try and bring to the stage as band is something we've always focused on. As for the details, I guess it's up to the punters to decide.”

What's the plan for Breaking Orbit beyond this tour?

“We take a few weeks off to recuperate, then it's back out again to cover all the other places in Australia we weren't able to get to on this run. Beyond that I can't reveal right now, but watch out for something in the news regarding overseas in early 2013.”

*Breaking Orbit are playing two shows here in Adelaide. Friday 31st of August they will be rocking out at Enigma Bar, and Saturday 1st of September they'll be at the Jetty Bar. For more info and tickets, check here*

Adelaide locals the Riot Runners are gearing up for the launch of their debut EP Le Seul which promises to be a ripping affair with Kingston Downes (Victoria), The Sunbirds and Nikai along for the ride rocking The Academy. Josh Morphett (vocals/guitar) from the band gives a greater insight to the Riot Runners and the launch of their EP.

What's the band been up to?

“Been finalising designs for the CD, but now that's finished just focusing on getting the live show together.”

Are you excited about the upcoming launch?

“Yes very excited about the upcoming launch, playing with 3 other fine acts and there's a couple of surprises being thrown in, so looking forward to it.”

Is it hard to believe the amount of work that goes in to something like this?

“No not really, although this is our debut EP, we've done this sort of thing for many years now and understand the hard work needed to make something that you really enjoy and are proud of.”

What are punters in for on the night?

“On the night there will be a couple of surprises that should increase the enjoyment of the show! Plus we can guarantee that we'll be rocking our arses off up there so the crowd can work off the huge amount of energy coming from the stage!”

Has the band been writing any new material since the EP launch?

“We're always writing new material, a lot gets chucked out, but there have been a couple of good ones lately that we might even try sneak into the set.”

Is the concept of releasing an album on CD dead as we know it?

“Releasing an album on CD is far from dead I think. Punters enjoy something that is physical as well as aural. I know I do at least.”

How would describe the music Riot Runners play?

“Grungy but riff orientated, progressive but not complicated, full of head banging breakdowns and catchy chorus's. Think 90's.”

Has your style changed much since starting out?

“Yes our style has changed, but we hope for the better. It was quite all over the place at the start and didn't have a particular direction we were heading in. We feel like we're just grasping our sound now and in the past half a year or so. When we first started out we were deciding whether to go with the "in" thing and go indie or 80's pop kinda thing, or go heavy and we figured 90's will be in after this 80's stuff is over with.”

How did the band get together?

“The band got together from a previous band split where the lead singer left and we were a singerless 3-piece. So we wrote a bunch of new songs, chose a direction or sound to pursue and josh stepped into the singing role.”

Who has been the biggest musical inspiration for the band?

“The biggest musical inspiration could be 1 of Led Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age, or Foo Fighters. Everyone starts with Zeppelin, and we all just love QOTSA and Foo Fighters and our sound is certainly influenced by them.”

Do you still remember the first jam session that band played?

“Our first jam session as the three of us would've been when the previous band was jamming and our singer hardly rocked up or came late, so we just jammed and I sang the songs. It was never a "hey guys let’s get together and see what happens," it was already there.”

What's the plan beyond the launch for the band?

“The plan beyond the launch is to promote the shit out of the EP, do some minor touring, and get the album ready for release early 2013.”

Riot Runners will be rocking at The Academy on Friday 18th August.

The Trafalgars get set to rock!

Adelaide favourites The Trafalgars have dusted off their gear to complete an awesome bill with Even and The Fauves. The Trafalgars have always had plenty of potential since Triple J took notice of their debut EP Thank You Captain and their double A-side single Sit With Me/Sunnyside Drive. It promises to be a real treat and front man Rhys Bowkett sheds some light on the build up to the occasion.

It seems like a long time between drinks, what have The Trafalgars been up to?

“Not a great deal. We are all pretty busy with work and so on so the band is just a bit of fun for us nowadays. We are all great mates so we still kick around together. We couldn't knock back the opportunity to play with these two great bands though.”

Is it hard keeping the momentum going in a band when there are so many other competing priorities with your time?

“Well we treat the band as a bit of a hobby that we can come back to after ages not thinking about it which is probably not a conventional way of band operation but it fits our lifestyles. We all really enjoy playing when we do actually do it though!”

Is the band excited about these upcoming shows that you’re playing?

“Yeah we are really looking forward to it, it should be a great night.”

How have rehearsals gone?

“Surprisingly well actually. Unfortunately our regular rehearsal space at Matt's place is being renovated so we've had to practice in other rehearsal spaces which we are not too keen on due to the fact that; a) we have to carry gear around more often, and; b) they generally smell pretty shite, but the actual songs have been sounding pretty good.  It's good to rediscover old songs that you haven't played in ages.”

Is everyone a little rusty or has it come back quickly?

“It actually started off really well so we assumed it would taper off and become more crap but it's been great!”

Have you known the guys from Even and The Fauves for a while and how did they convince you to play?

“We have been mates with the Even lads for ages, they are one of the best and most under rated Aussie bands getting around so it was a no brainer when they asked us to play. I'm really looking forward to seeing The Fauves too, It's been a long time since I've seen those guys, so it should be a corker.”

Awesome line up, you must be excited about playing The Gov?

“Yeah, we haven't played there in years and it's always a great place to play and see bands.”

Given that you've had a taster does this mean we may see more of the band over the summer?

“Well, who knows. I think Matt has us booked in for his cricket team's drinks night in January! “

Any plans to record any new material?

“We actually have a album's worth of songs about three quarters recorded so we were thinking about heading to Melbourne for a long weekend to mix them and finish off a few loose ends, so you never know... it would be nice to release them, even just for our own interest, plus mixing in Melbourne is a good excuse for a lads weekend!”

Are there any tour plans beyond these dates?

“Not at this stage but we do enjoy it so we'll play it by ear. Playing with these two great bands might be a bit of a kick in the pants to get playing again!”
